How to adjust privacy settings in the Facebook app for iPhone and iPad

Today on Talk Mobile the topic is social network privacy, with a particular emphasis on Facebook and employers. The question of the week is whether or not your employer should be entitled to ask for your Facebook password. Most of us will most likely say absolutely not.

That doesn't mean they can't snoop anything you haven't made private or available to only friends. That's why it's a good idea to check your Facebook privacy settings now and again. You can even do it right from the Facebook app for iPhone and iPad. Here's how:

How to adjust privacy settings universally in Facebook for iPhone and iPad

If you'd like to change who can see what you post to Facebook for everything you may post from the Facebook app, follow these directions:

  1. Launch the Facebook app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the menu button in the upper left hand corner.
  3. Now scroll down and tap on Privacy settings.
  4. Tap on Privacy.
  5. Under the Who Can See My Stuff menu, you can drill down into each menu and choose who can see what when you post it. This will change the default setting for posts going forward.

How to adjust privacy settings on a per post basis in Facebook for iPhone and iPad

Facebook also allows you to change settings on a per post basis for when you'd like to share certain things publicly and other things privately. Doing this will only override your privacy settings on that particular post but keep the default settings for everything else.

  1. Launch the Facebook app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to post a status or photo like you normally would.
  3. Tap on the Sharing settings icon above the keyboard to the right. The icon looks like two people with a drop down triangle next to them.
  4. Here you can change who you'd like to view that particular post.

Our recommendation is to set default privacy settings to friends only at the bare minimum and then adjust for public posts on an as needed basis when you need to.
